Augustus John Cuthbert Hare

13 March 1834 - 22 January 1903

AJCH, 1858 from a print by G. B. Canevari

Augustus Hare was a writer of topographical books (and a few biographies, including his 6 volume autobiography). On the following pages is a selection of anecdotes from Hare's autobiography, 'The Story of my Life' (Vols 1-3 (1896), Vols 4-6 (1900) published by George Allen, London).

Although Hare was primarily known for his travel writing, mostly European travel (Italy, France, Spain) he was also a famed raconteur of eerie tales and ghost stories many of which were reproduced in 'The Story of my Life'.
